Critical path
The critical path is the longest chain of dependent activities that sets the earliest possible project finish. Delay on the critical path delays the end date unless you recover time elsewhere.
Worked example
On a hypothetical hospital wing, foundations, structural frame, and enclosure sit on the critical path. Lobby finishes do not, so a lobby delay may not move substantial completion by itself.
